WA Retail Development Project
This report is produced monthly as part of the Western Australian
Fruit Growers Association (WAFGA) Citrus Council Retail Development
Project. The aim of the project is to provide fruit handling advice
to retailers and feedback to packers and growers on fruit quality
issues.
As part of the retail development project major supermarkets and
independent grocers are regularly visited to check the quantity
and quality of citrus fruit available on the shelf. The external
appearance of fruit is assessed in store and a sample of fruit
is collected and tested for percentage juice, degrees Brix and
sugar:acid ratio. This information is collated into the monthly
report which is provided to members of the WAFGA Citrus Council
and grower groups in QLD, NSW, VIC and SA.
The Western Australian Fruit Growers Association, the Director
General of the Department of Agriculture, Australian Citrus Growers
and the State of Western Australia accept no liability whatsoever
by reason of negliegence or otherwise arising from the use of
this information or any part of it.
Tracking citrus temperatures
Storage temperatures play a vital role in the freshness and quality of fruit post harvest. Last season the WA Retail Development Project identified possible deficiencies in the way fruit is stored and handled after it leaves the packing shed.
In response to this problem it was decided that temperature data loggers be placed in fruit boxes to monitor storage temperatures between the packing shed and retail outlet.
