The Australian citrus industry is the largest fresh fruit exporter in the Australian horticultural industry. In 2002/03 record export volumes of 167,000 tonnes were achieved, with an estimated gross value production of A$201 million.

Australia can export high quality fresh navel oranges and mandarins when they are out of season in the northern hemisphere. This includes Asian markets where Australia also has a natural advantage of proximity.

Massive restructuring within the Australian industry over recent years has allowed the industry to capitalise on the competitive advantages. The real value of citrus exports has grown at an impressive 14% per year between 1999 and 2001 - faster than the growth in Australia's total exports of goods and services.

The major markets for Australian navels are the USA, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Australian valencias are popular in Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore, whilst the major markets for mandarins are Hong Kong, Indonesia, USA and Japan.

Citrus Australia has a policy of investigating orderly marketing arrangements in all new export markets in order to make returns back to growers. Orderly marketing reviews are undertaken by an industry group consisting of growers and packers and exporters and implemented by Horticulture Australia Limited through the export control powers.
